Erinvale Golf Estate · Somerset West

Blinds and awnings specified for Erinvale's salt and south-easter — the mountain view stays, the afternoon glare doesn't.

Twelve chapters, one estate

Most blinds websites hand you a grid of thumbnails and wish you luck. We'd rather walk you through the range the way we'd walk you through a house — one product at a time, with an honest word on where each earns its keep in Erinvale.

Roller Blinds

Sitting room in an Erinvale home with a wide sunscreen roller blind on a copper tube half-lowered over the picture window, fynbos garden and fairway below the Helderberg

The fabric's whole job is to referee the light without benching the view.

Blockout for the bedrooms, sunscreen for the glass that looks over the course. On west-facing fairway lounges we lean on weaves in the 3–5% openness range: the glare and the UV go, and the Helderberg stays exactly where you left it.

Day & Night Blinds

Forest-green banded day-night blind across a home-office window in Erinvale, its sheer bands lined up so the mountain ridge shows straight through

Sheer bands for the morning light, solid bands for the neighbours.

Two fabrics on one tube — roll until the sheers line up, roll again for privacy. Right for studies and living rooms that swing between reading light and screen glare over the course of a single afternoon.

Venetian Blinds

Slim aluminium venetian slats seen through the deep green sash frame of a stone-walled Somerset West character home near Erinvale

A slat tilted eight degrees does what a curtain never could.

Aluminium where there's steam and splashing; timber where the room wants warmth. The tilt sends the low winter sun onto the ceiling instead of the television, and closes flat when you want the room to yourself.

Vertical & Panel Blinds

Linen-coloured panel blinds on a copper track gliding across double sliding doors in an Erinvale living room, golf course framed between the open panels

Four metres of patio glass, and not one seam line across the view.

Panels stack almost flat when open and glide across when the western sun leans in. Built for the wide sliders Erinvale's architects are so fond of — and for anyone tired of wrestling a curtain the size of a sail.

Cellular Honeycomb Blinds

Pleated honeycomb blinds in oatmeal fabric filtering light into a dark-green study in Erinvale, with a close view of the cell structure at the second window

The cheapest insulation you can hang from a bracket.

Each cell traps a pocket of still air across the pane. Through a damp Cape winter that keeps south-facing rooms noticeably warmer — and in February the same trick runs in reverse, holding the heat at the glass.

Concealed & Recessed Blinds

Deep green blockout blind descending from a concealed ceiling recess over double-volume glazing in an Erinvale lounge with exposed roof trusses

The best blind in the house is the one nobody can find.

A slot in the ceiling swallows the cassette; the fabric appears when the mountain sun does and vanishes again after. Cleanest when it's planned at building or renovation stage — so if there's an architect in the picture, bring us in early.

Skylight & Shaped Blinds

Tensioned pleated blinds fitted to the raked triangular glazing under a green timber roof gable in an Erinvale double-volume stair hall

Gables, rakes and light wells — the windows everyone else politely declines.

Angled glass needs shaped frames and tensioned fabric, not a standard blind hung at a hopeful angle. We template the odd shapes properly at the measure and quote them like any other window.

External Venetian Blinds

Deep green external venetian slats in a copper-trimmed frame on the stone-and-render facade of an Erinvale home, mountain glowing in the evening light

The top of what we fit — stop the heat at the glass and the lounge never has to fight it.

Slats mounted outside intercept the sun before it ever becomes indoor heat — on a west elevation the difference is not subtle. Ours come powder-coated for the salt that drifts up from False Bay, with concealed guides that hold them steady in a blow.

Folding-Arm Awnings

Underside of a green-and-cream striped folding-arm awning shading a Somerset West patio with a stone fire pit, the fairway and mountains beyond the lawn

Shade for lunch, open sky for the sunset over the eighteenth.

Metres of cantilevered canvas over the braai area, folding flat against the wall the moment the day cools. Every awning we fit on this side of the mountain carries a wind sensor — the fabric brings itself in before the south-easter arrives, whether you're home or not.

Zip Screens

Sand-toned zip screen drawn down over the arched opening of an Erinvale veranda, wicker furniture and the golf course softly visible through the mesh

The patio stays a room, even when the mountain exhales.

Mesh locked into side channels, so a gust can't lift it or slap it about. It takes the bite out of the wind and the late glare at the same time, and the course stays softly visible through the weave.

Roller Shutters

Forest-green aluminium roller shutter half-lowered over the glazed corner of a stone-clad Erinvale home, jagged Helderberg skyline behind the roofline

Total darkness on demand — and honesty about what they're not.

Motorised aluminium curtains on the outside of the glass: full blackout for shift-workers and late sleepers, serious heat rejection in summer, and a shield when a hail front rolls over the basin.

Shading first. These are sun, heat and glare shutters, not certified security barriers. If a security rating is what you're after, say so — that's a different product, and we'll quote it separately.

Motorised Blinds & Automation

Motorised sunscreen blind partway down the full-height stairwell glazing of an Erinvale home, green balustrade climbing past the fairway view

The stairwell glass is six metres up. Your phone doesn't care.

Motors in the tubes, schedules in an app: bedroom blinds that open with the sun, awnings that mind the weather while you're at work, and the only sensible answer for high glass no pole will ever reach.

Built for the Helderberg

Windows here answer to the mountain, not the street

Erinvale sits on the Helderberg's lower slopes, wrapped around its golf course, with False Bay showing on a clear day. That position decides what belongs on the glass here — more than fashion, more than habit, and certainly more than what worked at your last house.

01

Afternoon sun off the mountain

The Helderberg throws long afternoon shade over some fairways and none at all over others — a west-facing lounge on an open stand can run hot into the evening while the house two doors down barely notices. On the exposed side, sunscreen fabric around 3–5% openness is the standing answer: glare and UV out, the view you paid the premium for still in.

02

Coastal salt air, close by

Somerset West sits near enough to False Bay that cheap exterior hardware pits and seizes within a season or two. Every external blind, awning and shutter we fit here gets powder-coated aluminium and sealed cassettes — and we'll tell you straight that even marine-grade fittings appreciate an occasional fresh-water rinse.

03

The Cape south-easter

Between the gusts that funnel off the mountain and the summer south-easter, wind reaches Erinvale with real force. An awning left out in that doesn't survive it, so every exterior system we install carries a wind sensor — the fabric retracts on its own before the front lands, with nobody home to think about it.

04

Cape winter rain and estate finishes

Winter here means genuine sustained rainfall, not a highveld thunderstorm that's gone by supper. South-facing and less-ventilated rooms want moisture-tolerant products — aluminium venetians, sealed-finish timber — rather than untreated fabric. Erinvale also runs an aesthetic guideline like most golf estates, so we work in neutral, estate-friendly colourways as standard and suggest confirming the exact requirement with the estate before anything is ordered.

Scroll — the ridge draws itself in, the glare lifts off the glass.

The road to fitted

What happens after you say hello

One conversation, one visit, one piece of paper, one fitting day. It works the same for a single bright bedroom as it does for every pane on a fairway home.

01

The conversation

Use the form or the chat to tell us which rooms are misbehaving — glare in the lounge, a too-bright bedroom, a patio nobody can sit on after three.

02

The walk-through

We come to you with sample books, measure each opening to the millimetre, and talk fabric, openness and motors room by room — estate finish guidelines included.

03

The paper

An itemised quote, priced window by window. Sit with it as long as you like — it doesn't expire the moment we drive out the gate. Some idea beforehand: on this estate the spread is R1,000 to R7,500 a square metre installed, indoor fabric at one end, motorised exterior systems at the other. A minimum applies to tiny openings. Only the measure yields a real number.

04

The fit

Everything is made to your exact sizes, installed neatly — in one visit where the order allows — and demonstrated before the drill goes back in the bag.

About

No showroom, no stock sizes, one visit that decides everything

Everything offered here is manufactured for a single opening in a single house, on Erinvale Golf Estate and through the Helderberg pockets around it — Somerset West, Strand, Gordon's Bay and out towards Stellenbosch. Roller blinds, day & night blinds, external venetians, roller shutters, folding-arm awnings and motorised control all begin as a set of dimensions taken off your glass, not as an item pulled from a shelf.

The order of things rarely changes. An enquiry arrives through the form or the chat; one of our expert consultants will contact you shortly and books a free in-home measure. At the house every opening is measured, the substrate and the exposure are assessed, and fabric, openness and control are decided room by room against the aspect and the wind that room really lives with. A written quote comes back with a line for each window, so you can sit with it, stage it or trim it. When you approve it, the order is manufactured to those figures and installed, then demonstrated before the team leaves.

Whatever you type into the form or the chat is used to arrange that call-back and to price the work, and is handled under POPIA.

Questions

Asked on Erinvale doorsteps

My lounge faces west over the fairway and cooks from three o'clock. What actually fixes that?
Depends which enemy is bigger. If it's glare, a 3% sunscreen roller keeps the view and kills the dazzle. If it's heat, the honest answer is to stop the sun outside the glass — external venetians or a roller shutter — because once heat is through the pane, no interior fabric fully undoes it. Plenty of west-facing Erinvale lounges end up with a double roller: sunscreen for the day, blockout behind it for movie nights.
There's glass above our double-volume stairwell that no ladder should ever meet. Can you cover it?
Yes — that's precisely what motorisation is for. We measure the high glazing safely at the visit, fit a motorised blind, and you run it from a wall switch or your phone from then on. No pole, no ladder, no standing on the landing rail with a broom.
Will the estate's aesthetic guidelines limit what I can put up?
For anything visible from outside, possibly — Erinvale, like most golf estates, keeps exterior finishes within a defined palette. We default to neutral, low-visibility colourways for exactly this reason, and your consultant will flag anything that might need estate sign-off. We're not the aesthetics committee, though, so we always suggest confirming the current requirement with the estate office before an order is placed.
Is December's south-easter going to wreck an awning?
An unattended awning left out in a Cape gust, yes — which is why we don't fit them that way here. Ours carry wind sensors that retract the fabric automatically when the wind picks up, home or not. If the patio needs protection during the wind rather than shelter from sun, a zip screen is the better tool: the mesh is locked into side channels, so the gusts push against it instead of getting underneath it.
We've got a toddler. What does "child-safe" mean in practice, not on a pamphlet?
It means no free-hanging loop anywhere a small person can reach. Chains and cords get tensioned tight to the wall on every install as standard, and for nurseries and playrooms we'd steer you to cordless springs or motors, where there's simply nothing to grab in the first place.
How long from the measure to blinds on the windows?
Everything is made to order to your sizes, so most installations happen a few weeks after you approve the quote — the quote itself states the current lead time for each product, so you get a real date rather than a guess. Once the order lands, fitting is usually a single tidy visit.
